About this work

Society Artist, Palm Beach circa 1960

A woman with dark hair and red lips sits on a tall wooden stool, in a red-and-white striped sweater and jeans spattered with paint. Beside her on an easel stands a painting of two white, twisting forms with shells. Around her: lattice on the walls, small framed pieces, a plaster bust by the window, lilies in a vase and a stack of magazines with ARTS on top.

Around 1960 Slim Aarons photographed Tish Massie Widener, Mrs. Peter Widener, artist and miniaturist, in her studio in Palm Beach; the picture was included in A Wonderful Time. Aarons does not have her paint but pose, one foot on the rung of the stool, beside the work on the easel. Maker and painting stand like two portraits side by side, both surrounded by the small work on the walls.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
