About this work
Bohemia's Barracks, New York 1968
In a high, red-carpeted lobby, an older man sits on a piano bench, sheet music beside him. On the left a woman with long red hair stands by a camera on a tripod, before a dark carved mantelpiece. At right a bespectacled man sits at a typewriter, and behind him a dancer in a black leotard raises her leg. On a pedestal stands a figure in a red bikini.
The caption places the group in the lobby of the Chelsea Hotel on W. 23rd Street in Manhattan, New York, in 1968, and names ten people, among them photographer Sandy Daley, composer George Kleinsinger, writer Charles Jackson, dancer Geraldine Munch and hotel manager Stanley Bard. Everyone got a place of their own and a prop of their own: the camera, the piano, the typewriter. So the group portrait becomes a map of who lives and works here.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
