About this work
Skiing In Stowe, Vermont 1962
A young woman stands in the snow in a beige suede jacket, a black turtleneck and black ski pants, wearing a burgundy hat. In one hand she holds a pair of red skis with the poles upright, in the other a green duffel bag. She looks off to the side, away from the camera. Behind her stand a white house, a red barn with a silo and bare trees.
The caption gives no name: a young woman waiting in Stowe, Vermont, in 1962 to head out on a ski run. The camera is low, so she rises above the plain of snow and the skis reach as high as she does. The red of the skis returns in the barn and the silo, tying the woman to the place where she stands. She is waiting, but she already stands ready.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
