About this work

Ski Slope In St. Moritz, March 1963

A snow-covered peak fills the upper half of the picture, with clouds drifting along the ridge. Below it a dark conifer forest drops into the valley. Only at the very bottom, on a white slope, do tiny skiers file downhill in a long line, past a few poles that mark the run. You have to look for a moment before you spot them.

Slim Aarons photographed this slope near St. Moritz in Switzerland in March 1963. The people the caption is about stand literally in the bottom edge. That is where the strength of the picture lies: the upright format stacks snow, forest and snow again, and only once your eye has sunk all the way down does the mountain acquire a scale. The skiers are the ruler you measure everything else against.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
