Alfresco Dining, Antibes 1969
Beneath a large cream-colored parasol a party sits at a laid table on a terrace, the adults in summer shirts and floral prints. In front sit a girl in a striped top and a woman with long blond hair, both facing away from the camera. A waiter in a white jacket and bow tie stands behind the table. On the right a driveway runs between hedges to a pale building.
In August 1969 these guests sat down to a meal at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, on the French Riviera. The parasol does the most work in this composition. Its wooden ribs and canopy form a ceiling above the table and shut the party off from the glaring afternoon outside. That makes the scene feel enclosed and homely, while the long driveway on the right shows how large the grounds around it are.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
