About this work
Skiing In Vail, 1964
In the upright picture the mountain takes up almost everything: a steep white slope with snow-covered spruces, and straight up it the chairlift with its towers and dangling chairs, some occupied. Only at the very bottom does a handful of skiers stand at the start, skis upright beside them, one red among the black. A thick layer of fresh snow lies on the spruces.
This work shares its caption with another shot: skiers in line for the lift in Vail, Colorado, 1964. Here Aarons reverses the proportions. The waiting skiers have slid to the bottom edge and the lift becomes the subject, a straight line pulling the eye from the bottom to the summit. Standing at the bottom, you can already see the whole ride ahead, chair by chair.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
