About this work
St Tropez Garden, August 1977
Between two white marble statues of women, a woman in a long red halter dress with a high slit stands on a stone balustrade. She rests a hand on the shoulder of the left statue and looks straight into the lens. Behind her stone urns with pink and red flowers stand before dark trees; on the right red blooms hang out of focus.
An elegant woman posed in a garden in Saint-Tropez in August 1977. The caption does not name her, and the photograph does not need it to. She stands between the statues like a third figure, just as upright and almost as still. Only color sets her apart: red among marble white. That play between the living and the sculpted is the whole idea of this picture.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
