About this work
Eye Of The Beholder, Capri 1974
Four sunbathers lie one above the other on the steps of a terrace, each on a rust-brown cushion, stretched out in the sun; a straw hat lies beside one of them. Below, in the swimming pool, a man with wet shoulders leans on the edge and looks up at the row. You see only his back and the back of his head.
In August 1974 a man gazed up at the sunbathers by the pool of Hotel Punta Tragara on Capri, Italy. The photograph is built like a staircase, and you look along from the same spot as he does. His back sits at the bottom, the reclining figures fill the steps above as horizontal stripes. This makes the viewer the onlooker of the title, with the man in the water as a stand-in.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
