About this work
Olimpia Hruska, Costa Smeralda 1964
A young woman in a light, patterned bikini leans against an enormous granite rock, one arm stretched high over the stone, the other hanging down. She looks to the side, away from the camera. Beside her is a deep hollow in the rock. On the left lie a small blue boat, round boulders and scrub beside still, clear water.
The Swedish model Olimpia Hruska posed against a rock on the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia, Italy, in 1964. What makes the picture compelling is the relationship between body and stone. The rock has something of a figure itself, with hollows and bulges, and she bends to its shape instead of standing in front of it. Her outstretched arm follows exactly the curve of the top.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
