About this work
Holidaymakers In Antibes, August 1969
A stone path winds between low white beach cabins with pink roofs toward the rocky coast. A man in a dark shirt, white trousers and a hat walks away from the camera. Ahead of him walks a woman in a striped sweater and, farther along the path, two more bathers, one in a light blue swimsuit. On the right the sea glitters behind the rocks.
Guests of the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, on the French Riviera, in August 1969. Slim Aarons photographed them from behind, on their way. That viewpoint turns the viewer into one of the walkers: you follow in their footsteps along the path, past the cabins, toward water you can only half see. The picture is less about who they are than about where they are heading.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
