About this work
Monte Carlo Swimwear, August 1970
A woman in a black swimsuit with an openwork side and a row of teardrop-shaped cutouts stands beneath red-and-white parasols with fringe. She wears a turquoise headscarf, round amber sunglasses and a gold necklace. One hand rests on her hip, a cigarette between her fingers; the other she holds near her face. Behind her blurred guests sit at a table.
A woman in a cutaway swimsuit, Monte Carlo, August 1970. The caption says no more, and the picture is mostly a study of the garment. The upright format cuts her off above the knee and below the parasol, so that the black of the swimsuit fills the middle of the frame. Within it the cutouts stand out like a pattern of light, sharper than everything around them.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
