About this work
Saint-Tropez, August 1971
On the wooden deck of a yacht, holidaymakers lie and sit on deck chairs with dark blue cushions. In front a woman in a blue bikini stretches out, a bowl of fruit rests on a blue cushion, and a bare-chested man talks with the others. Just behind the railing lies the quay, full of terraces, awnings and passersby, with a statue and tall pastel facades.
Holidaymakers on the deck of a yacht in Saint-Tropez, France, in August 1971. The picture draws its life from two worlds only a few meters apart. On board there is calm, with cushions, fruit and bare feet. On the quay, just behind the railing, the crowd from the cafés presses in. The party on deck sits on a stage, the harbor looks on, and nobody on board seems to notice.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
