About this work
Skiers At Gstaad, March 1969
On a snowy slope a small group of skiers stands together, their skis planted upright in the snow like a fence of red, black and white slats. In the middle stands a woman in a long fur coat and sunglasses, next to a figure in a bright red ski suit. On the right two men in Norwegian sweaters talk. In front, a wooden sign points to a restaurant.
Slim Aarons took this picture in Gstaad, Switzerland, in March 1969. Little happens: nobody is skiing, everybody is standing. That is exactly what makes the image. The upright skis form a rhythm of vertical lines across the whole width, and the people stand among them as if they, too, were parked for a moment. Against the even white slope, the colors of coats and slats leap forward all the harder.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
