About this work

Lunch At La Pigna, Capri 1980

In the foreground a long table is laden with food: platters of mussels, fresh fish, halved lemons, red and yellow peppers, zucchini, lettuce and bottles of wine. Behind it a party sits at a round table with a pink cloth, beneath a pergola with lemons hanging from the branches. One man stands behind the table. On the wall at right hang small framed paintings.

American restaurateurs lunched at La Pigna on Capri, Italy, in August 1980: Gilda Cioffi of Mama Gilda in Palm Beach, Guy Avventuiero and his wife of Gino's in New York, Gus and Geraldine Pucillo of the Petite Marmite in Palm Beach, and, standing, Renato de Gregorio. The guests are secondary here. The spread fills the lower half of the picture and pushes the professionals back, as if the food itself were posing.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
