About this work
Marbella Club, 1976
A young woman with long blond hair and a pink gingham bikini sits on a bench with a woven back, in the shade of a wooden canopy. She looks over her shoulder into the lens. Behind her stand men in swim trunks, out of focus and half cut off by the edge of the frame; at the bottom left a dog lies on the floor.
A guest took a break from the sun at the Marbella Club in Marbella, Spain, in 1976. Light is the story here. Under the canopy it is subdued, and most of what comes in falls on her: face, shoulders, legs. The men behind her stand deeper in shadow, half in the frame, like scenery. Only she looks at the camera, and that gaze holds the picture together.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
