About this work
Sailing In Lyford Cay, 1966
High up the mast of a sailing yacht, a crew member stands barefoot on the spreaders, one hand on the shrouds, the other on a line. He wears a striped shirt and white trousers and looks sideways past the ropes. On the right the white sail fills the edge of the frame, alongside a wooden spar. Behind it hangs a gray-blue, cloudy sky.
According to the caption, a crew member worked on the rigging of a yacht at Lyford Cay in the Bahamas in April 1966. Slim Aarons shot from below, so the man stands against the sky and the lines of the rigging run toward him like rays. The sail and mast press into the picture from the right. He seems to balance in a web of ropes.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
