About this work
Private Island, Philippines, 1973
A young woman with short black hair lies laughing in a wicker hanging chair suspended by two ropes under a tree. She wears a red-and-white striped bikini and leans on pastel-striped cushions, her knees drawn up. Through the open weave of the chair you see the white beach, the sea and a mountain ridge in the distance; thin conifer branches hang at the top.
A guest relaxed in February 1973 on the beach of a private island owned by Benigno Toda Jr., president of Philippine Airlines, in the Philippines. The upright format makes the chair a frame: the coarse grid of wicker stands between the woman and the sea, so that you see the landscape as through a window. The stripes of bikini and cushions repeat that pattern, but in color.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
