About this work
Cecily Godfrey, Hong Kong 1979
A woman in a white strapless swimsuit sits on a purple printed cloth at the edge of a narrow pool, her legs stretched out. In front of her stands a low wooden table with a dish and a book. Around the pool grows a dense wall of bamboo; on the left a wooden statue stands on a plinth, on the right a blue-and-white porcelain jar.
Cecily Godfrey relaxed by the pool at her home in Hong Kong in 1979. Her husband, Gerald, was Vice-President of the Court of Appeal in Hong Kong. The wide frame leaves plenty of space around her: stone in the foreground, the water, the bamboo shooting up like a green wall. As a result the pool looks like a sheltered room in the midst of the green, with her small and upright at the center.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
