About this work

Mrs John Ireland, Santa Barbara 1975

A woman with full blond hair sits on the arm of a flowered sofa, in a long light pink dress with ruffles at the sleeves. Pressed against her sits a girl with long brown hair in a lilac dress with ruffles, looking gravely into the camera. Around them is a living room in subdued light: flower arrangements, a red table lamp, pots on open shelves.

Mrs John Ireland with her daughter Daphne in Santa Barbara, California, May 1975. The portrait is built from shades of one color: pink, lilac, the flowers on the sofa and the red lampshade. The room behind stays dark, so mother and daughter come forward as a patch of light. The difference lies in their gaze: the mother looks open and calm, the girl serious and expectant.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
