About this work
Luxury Travel, 1960
Lucius Beebe sits in a gray silk dinner jacket with a bow tie in a white chair at the end of a narrow salon, beside a silver cooler on a side table. Behind him stand a white mantelpiece and a gilded mirror beneath a chandelier. Gold draperies hang before the windows, a red sofa at left, a yellow one at right. The ceiling is painted with clouds and figures.
Author, columnist and bon vivant Lucius Beebe traveled around America in his own railroad cars. This one was called the 'Virginia City' and had a solid marble gas log fire in the observation lounge, according to the caption. What makes the image so strange is that nowhere can you see that this is a train car. Only the long, narrow shape and the raised center strip of the ceiling give it away; the rest is a drawing room.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
