About this work

Monaco Grand Prix, 22 May 1977

Jackie Stewart stands on the circuit with a microphone in his hand, in a cream-colored blazer, black trousers and a black cap. At left a large television camera is aimed at him. Behind him stands a red race car with the number 7 and the lettering Martini and Brabham, a driver in a helmet in the cockpit. All around are mechanics, photographers and apartment blocks.

Racing driver Jackie Stewart made a television broadcast on 22 May 1977 at the Monaco Grand Prix; behind him stood John Watson's 'Martini' car. The picture puts the driver in a different role: not in the car but in front of it, with a microphone instead of a steering wheel. The camera at left in the foreground makes that visible, because you look on over the cameraman's shoulder.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
