About this work
Leonard Dalsemer, Lyford Cay 1974
A family keeps busy around a clear pool, fringed by a hedge with red flowers and white pots. Three people swim, a woman lies on a lounger at left, a man in a pink shirt stands at the edge. Beyond the lawn walk a man in a white cap and a woman in green. Tall palms stand against sea and blue sky, at right a house with a sloping roof.
Leonard Dalsemer and his family were photographed in April 1974 at their villa in Lyford Cay, on New Providence Island. The picture builds up in horizontal bands: flower pots, hedge, water, grass, sea and sky, layer after layer. The family members are spread across those bands, some in the water, others above it, so that it is not a group portrait but an ordinary day by the pool.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
