About this work
Cranmore Mountain Skiers, 1955
Three skiers walk as silhouettes along a snowy ridge, their skis on their shoulders or upright beside them. The one on the left steps past the flat roof of a hut, the other two walk on farther along the ridge. Above them the sun shines like a pale smudge through a thick layer of cloud. On the snow in the foreground tracks and crusts of ice glisten.
Skiers at the Cranmore Mountain Resort in North Conway, New Hampshire, in 1955: that is what the caption says, and the picture needs to say no more. Slim Aarons chose the backlight and turned the three figures into black silhouettes without faces. They occupy only a narrow strip halfway up the picture; above them the high, empty plane of cloud and sun, below them the snow. The vertical format gives the sky all the room.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
