Monte Mano, Costa Smeralda 1973
A dark-haired swimmer pulls through clear, greenish water set among grey boulders, as if the stones themselves formed the pool. Along the front rock runs a row of inlaid colored stones. Beyond it the land drops away to a bay of white houses, and farther out islands lie blue in the haze above the sea.
Slim Aarons made the picture in August 1973 at Monte Mano, the home of architect Jacques Couëlle on the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia. The caption calls it a seaside-style pool, and you can see why: no tiles and no straight edges, only stone and water. What makes the image work is the height. The pool sits like a terrace above the landscape, so the swimmer seems to float in the water and above the bay at once.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
