About this work
We Know Our Place, New Jersey 1958
Beneath a canopy of old trees, a man in a light grey suit and bowler hat and a woman in a dark red coat stand beside an open cart with yellow wooden wheels. A Dalmatian lies in the grass at their feet. On the left a man in a brown coat, breeches and boots holds the brown horse by the bridle. At right a white house shows through the green.
John M. Seabrook and his wife posed in 1958 with a horse and cart in the garden of their estate in New Jersey; the caption notes that the picture appears in A Wonderful Time. The people are small beside the trees, which fill almost the whole square with light, translucent foliage. That makes it a portrait of a place rather than of two people. Horse, couple and cart form a low row beneath the branches, with the Dalmatian a white spot at their feet.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
