About this work
Racing At Baden Baden, September 1978
From above you look down on a terrace full of white garden chairs and tables with green cloths, set with plates, glasses and flowers. Some of the crowd carry on eating, others already stand at the white rail. Beyond them six horses with jockeys in bright silks gallop across the grass, past a white post and a second rail.
Spectators dined in the open air as the horses went by, at the Baden-Baden racecourse in September 1978. Aarons chose a viewpoint high above the terrace, so the picture splits into two bands: below, the busy pattern of chairs, tables and hats; above, the empty green with the horses. The race is small and far away; the meal takes up two thirds of the image. That makes the photograph more about the crowd than about the sport.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
