About this work

Hpaung Daw U Pagoda, Myanmar 1971

Across brown, still water, narrow wooden boats head toward a white pagoda with tiered roofs and a golden spire. People sit close together in the boats, two men stand at the stern with long oars. In the foreground lies an empty boat with a woven bottom. At right another small boat passes, and the spire is faintly mirrored in the water under a cloudy sky.

Boatmen, rowing with their legs in the local manner, approached the Hpaung Daw U Pagoda on Inle Lake in the Taunggyi District of Shan State, Myanmar (Burma), in May 1971. The pagoda is an important Buddhist site. The picture looks on from the water: the empty boat in the foreground points like an arrow at the full boats, and they in turn point at the spire.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
