About this work
Sugarbush Skiing, Vermont 1960
A single skier stands bent forward on the edge of a snowy ridge, poles angled behind him, about to set off. He wears a white knitted cap, a light sweater and dark trousers. His shadow falls long and sharp across the snow below him, toward the viewer. To the right a slope of frosted spruces drops away to a valley in blue haze.
Skiing at Sugarbush, a mountain resort in Vermont, in April 1960. Aarons places the skier alone against the sky, with the hazy mountains behind him and no one else in the frame. The shadow matters at least as much as the man: a dark shape running diagonally down the slope, toward the viewer. So he appears twice in the picture, once light against the sky and once dark on the snow, and the ridge beneath him seems steeper than it is.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
