About this work

Coward Abroad, Jamaica 1953

Two men sit in a white rowing boat on blue-green water. On the right a man leans with his arms over the gunwale and looks into the camera; on the left a young man in a white T-shirt sits at the oar, which angles into the water. Between them stand a small sign with writing and a British flag. White clouds pile up above the low horizon.

The caption names Noel Coward, English playwright, actor and composer, on holiday in Jamaica in 1953 in a hired rowing boat. Which of the two men he is, it does not say. Aarons keeps the camera low, just above the water, so boat and sea fill the frame. The oar draws a long diagonal through the lower half and brings movement to the flat sea; far off to the right someone is swimming.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
