About this work

Amalfi Coast, Italy 1978

A windsurfer with a yellow-and-blue sail glides over dark blue water, with a steep rock face at left. Farther out lie a few more surfers and small boats. On the far side a village of white and ocher houses climbs the slope, with terraces above, and behind it gray-green mountains rise into the clouds.

Windsurfing on the water off the Amalfi Coast in Italy, in September 1978. The picture works through contrast in scale and color. The surfer is the only bright point, yellow against a flat of deep blue, and behind him houses, terraces and mountains pile up into a wall that fills the whole upper part. The small sail seems to be heading straight into a wall of land.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
