About this work

Pool At Villa Gli Arieti, Ansedonia 1986

A pool shaped like two interlocking curves lies on a natural-stone terrace above the sea. On the island in the middle stands a white fringed parasol, with people sunning themselves around it. Two swimmers stand in the water, and a woman in a blue swimsuit lies on the edge. Farther off, towers stand on the rocks and a sailboat lies in the bay.

The pool belonged to Villa Gli Arieti, the home of Lamberto Micangeli in Ansedonia, near Porto Ercole; Aarons photographed it in September 1986. In the distance, according to the caption, stands the sixteenth-century castle of his daughter Marina, Torre San Pancrazio. The strength of the image lies in the repetition of curves: the bend of the pool, the round parasol, the round towers on the headland and the coastline curving away in the distance.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
