About this work
Jean Serpieri, near Athens 1961
From a low angle you look up at a Gothic ceiling of red rosettes and blue latticework, from which a golden chandelier with candles hangs. Only below it, small in the middle of the hall, a woman in a wide blue gown sits on a bench. Around her are blue walls, tall doors standing open to other rooms, chairs along the wall and a floor with a pattern of hexagons.
In December 1961, Madame Jean Serpieri sat in the ballroom of the Tour La Reine near Athens, dressed in a gown that belonged to the wife of Otto, the first king of modern Greece. The palace originally belonged to King Otto and served as the royal family's summer residence. Here Aarons chooses the hall over the woman: the ceiling takes up nearly half the picture, and she becomes a blue patch between the doors.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
