About this work

Gloria Schiff And Consuelo Crespi, Costa Smeralda 1968

Two women sit side by side on a bench with fringed cushions against a rough stone wall, laughing into the camera. On the left a young woman with long dark hair in a short striped dress in red, white and navy, with long gold necklaces. On the right a woman with her hair up in a brown and white floral dress, with red beads and gold at her neck.

According to the caption, these are Pilar Crespi and her mother, the Italian countess Consuelo Crespi, on the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia in August 1968. The light picks the two out clearly from the half-dark of the stone room. What carries the image is the mirroring: the same laugh, the dark hair, the stacked necklaces. Only the dresses differ, stripes beside flowers, and that is exactly where you see two generations side by side.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
