About this work
Lady Hamilton, Kenya 1958
A woman in a pink flowered dress sits on a wooden bench beneath a tree with a smooth yellow trunk; in front of the bench a dog lies sleeping. To her right stands a large group of men and women in red, ochre and yellow cloths, with beaded collars; some hold a spear or staff. In front stands a woman in yellow. Behind them hills lie in the haze.
Lady Hamilton rested in 1958 in the shade of a tree, in the company of a Kenyan tribe, according to the caption. The source does not name who else is in the picture. What carries the image is the tree: its branches stretch like a roof across the top edge, the pale trunk stands as a column on the left, and in that shade the pink of her dress and the red and yellow of the cloths stand out sharply.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
