About this work
Anne Anka, 1976
Anne Anka sits leaning against the front of a dark blue Mercedes, in a light blouse and black trousers; a girl on the hood rests a hand on her shoulder. At left a girl in a pink dress holds a small dog in her arms, at right a child in a riding helmet sits on a black pony and holds a second, piebald pony by the rein.
Anne Anka, wife of singer Paul Anka and daughter of Count Charles de Zogheb, was photographed in November 1976 with her daughters Alicia, Anthea, Alexandra and Amanda. The image plays with two kinds of pride: on one side the gleaming car, on the other the ponies. The mother sits exactly on the border between the two, and the white, misty sky above makes the group stand out sharply.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
