About this work
d'Arragona Lovatelli, Montecito 1976
A bedroom whose walls and ceiling are painted all over: skies full of clouds, a lagoon with palaces and towers, boats on the water. On the left a woman sits upright in a tall bed with a gilded, carved frame, a breakfast tray on the flowered coverlet. At the back a man reads a newspaper. A small dog lies on the bed, and white deep-pile carpet covers the floor.
According to the caption, these are Mr and Mrs Alexander Saunderson in 1976 in the bedroom of their home in Montecito, a residential enclave of Santa Barbara, California. Mrs Saunderson had the walls painted by the English artist John Sander. The image works because the room seems to have no boundaries: corners and ceiling pass unnoticed into sky and water, and the couple sit as if inside a painting.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
