About this work

Little Beach House, Acapulco 1975

Three riders walk their horses across a broad gray beach, two boys side by side at left and a third rider on a brown horse at right. They ride barefoot and in swimwear. Behind a low brick wall, among the palms, stands a house on stilts with a tall thatched pointed roof. In the distance, mountains fade away under a cloudy sky.

Horseback riding on the beach in Acapulco, Mexico, in February 1975; in the background, according to the caption, stands 'Little Beach House', the villa of Manuel Perusquia Jr. The work's name refers to that house, but Aarons keeps it small and far away. The thatched roof does just clear the palms, so that it seems to keep an eye on the riders in the foreground.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
