About this work
Acapulco Afternoon, Acapulco 1952
On a terrace covered with dried palm leaves, a group in swimwear sits on and around white and red wooden chairs. At right a man in a flowered shirt and white trousers plays guitar while the others listen, a few with a glass in hand. Red bougainvillea hangs over the edge. Below lies a bay with boats and a beach, and on the hill behind stand white buildings.
Bill Babb, Thomas Beecher, model Carolyn Phillips, Mrs Rabb and model Jean Adams listened to guitar music in 1952 on a terrace in Acapulco, Mexico, its floor covered with palm leaves. The caption does not say who is who. The picture gets its depth from layers: flowers in the foreground, the company in the middle, the bay and the hill in the distance, all equally sharp.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
