About this work

A Nice Spot For Lunch, Bermuda 1957

On a projecting ledge of rock above clear, pale blue water, three people are having a picnic. A woman in light trousers stands pointing out to sea, a second sits in a yellow sweater, and a man in shorts sits a little farther off beside a basket. In the foreground spiky plants stick up; the water stretches clear to the horizon.

The caption speaks of a group picnicking on a rocky coastline in Bermuda in 1957. The people are small, and that is precisely the point: most of the square is water, shallow enough to show the rocks on the bottom. The ledge they sit on juts out like a tabletop above the sea, so that the lunch seems at once within reach and a little dizzying.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
