About this work
Young Society, Palm Beach 1964
Around a round planter with palms stands a group of young women, most of them in sleeveless dresses with bold floral prints in pink, yellow, green and blue. A few sit on the rim, feet in the shallow water; girls in similar little dresses stand among them. At right a metal ring sculpture stands above a small fountain, and behind the palms is a white building with balconies.
Young married women of Palm Beach, Florida, in April 1964; most wore a gaily colored Lilly Pulitzer shift, according to the caption. The image comes from A Wonderful Time. Aarons arranges the group like a class photograph, but in the water and without rows. What holds it together is the print: variation after variation on the same idea, from grown woman to small child, so the dresses tell you more about the group than the faces do.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
