About this work
Villa In Sotogrande, 1975
Under a white arcade a barefoot man leans against a column, one arm raised against the stone, in a long pink-and-white striped robe. On either side stand set tables with red-and-white checked cloths and white wicker chairs, and pink geraniums bloom in pots along the edge. Through the arches you see a swimming pool and more white facades.
Alfonso Zobel De Ayala posed for Slim Aarons in August 1975 at a villa in Sotogrande, Andalusia. The architecture does the work: three arches form a frame within the frame, the dark beams pull the eye to the center, and there he stands, the only upright streak of color between the columns. The pink of his robe returns in the tablecloths and the flowers, as if everything had been chosen to match.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
