About this work
Palermo Market, 1975
In a crowded market street a man in a black shirt stands behind a large pot of potatoes and spreads his hands, in the middle of a story. Two women at left look on, amused, one with her arms crossed. On the stall next to him lie pears, tomatoes and ears of corn. Behind, the crowd pushes between the stalls, under balconies, shutters and an arch of lights.
In August 1975 Slim Aarons photographed a street market in Palermo, Sicily. He stands right in the middle, at eye level, so the goods fill the bottom of the frame and the street draws deep into the picture behind the vendor. The man with the pot is the center, but the picture only comes to life through the two women watching him: they turn his gesture into a performance.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
