About this work
Versace and Spagnol, Lake Como 1983
On the white foredeck of a motor launch a woman and a man sit side by side, both turned toward the camera. She wears red and pink, with large glasses and curly hair; he a blue sweater and brown trousers, and smiles beneath his beard. Behind them, across the dark water, an ochre villa with green shutters stands above a quay wall and a balustrade.
Fashion designer Gianni Versace and Lalla Spagnol were photographed in June 1983 on a motor launch in front of his seventeenth-century villa on Lake Como. Slim Aarons stands on the boat itself, so the white bow fills the bottom of the frame like a stage. The house stands straight and symmetrical between their heads, while the pair in front sit relaxed and slightly askew. The owner sits, quite literally, in front of his property.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
