About this work

Perkin Brothers At Boca Grande, 1991

Four young people stand shoulder to shoulder on a strip of grass by the water, laughing broadly at the camera. The two tall boys on the outside each hold a lacrosse stick upright, like a spear; the two girls in the middle have a stick and a tennis racket. Printed shirts, a hooded sweatshirt, windblown hair. Behind them the sea fades into bright light.

In March 1991 Thorne Perkin and his brother Christopher Perkin posed with two girls at Boca Grande, on Gasparilla Island in Florida. Slim Aarons chooses a frontal arrangement reminiscent of a school photo and lets the laughter break it open. The sticks on either side work as brackets around the group; inside those brackets everyone leans toward each other. The black and white keeps the picture sober.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
