About this work
Marbella Club Couple, 1970
A man and a woman stand barefoot at the edge of a pool, looking the same way, out of frame. He is bearded and wears only red patterned swim trunks, she a white tunic with a woven belt, her hair windblown. Behind them water falls like a curtain down a rock face. At left a woman in a black bikini sits at a set table under a red parasol.
Slim Aarons photographed bathers at the Marbella Club in Marbella, Spain, in September 1970. He has the couple stand side by side with the same gaze, like two lookouts, and puts the waterfall behind them, filling the whole backdrop. That curtain of falling water makes the background restless and the figures still. The woman at the table, looking the other way, provides the counterweight.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
