About this work

Pucci Yacht, Porto Ercole 1969

On the foredeck of a motor yacht with a white hull and wooden superstructure, a woman in a yellow bikini lies on a blue cushion; beside her sit a few others, among them a child in a white hat. A man in blue-and-white striped trunks stands upright, and at the bow a boy in yellow shorts and a white hat. Behind them the sea glitters against rocky shores.

Emilio Pucci, Marchese di Barsento, vacationed with family and friends on a luxury yacht in Porto Ercole, Tuscany, in August 1969. Aarons photographed from the side and almost at water level. As a result the hull fills the lower half of the picture like a broad white block, and the party stands on it as on a stage, each in a different pose: lying, sitting, standing.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
