About this work

Dining In The Bahamas, circa 1957

A long path of stone tiles runs across the lawn to a swimming pool among white parasols. A waiter in a white suit walks away from you with a tray, toward the water; a woman in a yellow tunic and an orange hat comes walking the other way. Behind the pool, grass terraces climb to a row of arches, and the sky takes up the top half.

Around 1957 Slim Aarons photographed a waiter with a tray in the Bahamas as he passed a woman walking away from the pool; around the water stood tables, each with a parasol against the sun. The path is the backbone of the image: it divides the lawn into two halves and lets the two figures cross almost exactly in the middle. He is at work, she is not.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
