About this work
Princess Colonna, Capri 1958
A woman with reddish pinned-up hair looks calmly into the lens, under a straw hat with a striped band in red, green and blue. She wears a loose blouse with a leaf print in blue, white and green and a thin red chain. Behind her, out of focus, lies clear green water between pale rocks; at right stand a wicker bench and a metal pole.
Princess Colonna posed for Slim Aarons in July 1958 on the island of Capri, in a blouse in blue, white and green and a Panama-style hat. The portrait is close and simple: no set, only the blurred rocks and the water behind. All attention goes to the colors, and they speak to each other: the blue and green of the blouse return in the bay behind her.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
