About this work

Porto Ercole, Tuscany 1980

Seen from directly above, a wooden jetty sits on a rock, with three people in swimwear at the end looking at the water. On the right someone dives into a cloud of foam; another climbs the ladder. At the bottom stand a red and a blue parasol, blue deck chairs and a man in a straw hat next to a woman in a deck chair.

According to the caption, this is the same jetty on the rocky shoreline of Porto Ercole in Tuscany, in August 1980. This picture chooses the upright format and an almost vertical view. The water takes up the upper half, green and dark, the shore with the parasols the lower. The jetty hangs in between like a plank over the deep, and the three figures at the end seem about to jump.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
