About this work
Haiti Holiday, 1981
A woman stands in light blue, glittering swimming-pool water, her wet hair combed back. Her thin blouse is soaked and translucent. In her hand she holds a cocktail glass with a lime on the rim, a ring on her finger. She looks past the camera, her mouth closed, two thin chains around her neck.
Slim Aarons photographed her in February 1981 in a swimming pool in Haiti; the caption mentions a translucent white blouse and a cocktail in her hand. The picture is built on a contrast: the light, turquoise water glittering in the sun, and in front of it a gaze that is more guarded than relaxed. She does not smile. That very seriousness keeps the picture from being an ordinary holiday snapshot.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
